Engineering and Manufacturing Philanthropy 2012-12-20
Author: Derek Korn
From: Modern Machine Shop
May We Help (MWH) is a non-profit I profiled in my One-Off column for our January issue. In short, MWH is a unique non-profit supported by volunteers who apply their design and manufacturing know-how to make assistive devices for disabled children and adults at no cost to them. The organization focuses on enhancing the enjoyment of people’s lives beyond their basic assistive needs, enabling them to more effectively explore their passions and interests. Examples include a modified bike for a boy with one leg, a stand to enable a girl with no arms to play a cello and a platform rocker for a woman in a wheelchair. (Visit its site for more info.)

How to Avoid Heat Treatment Problems When Launching New Gear Programs 2012-11-09
Author: C. Zimmerman, P. Connor & C. Bassetti
From: Thermal Processing for Gear Solution
Heat treatment, such as carburizing, hardening and tempering, or nitriding, is a critical operation required to manufacture gears. It makes them wear-resistant, develops excellent mechanical properties, and increases fatigue life. Heat treatment is also the source of many potential problems and pitfalls. It can produce unpredictable amounts of distortion.

Measurement System Analysis (MSA) 2012-08-15
Author: Fred Eberle
From: Gear Solution Magazine
The analysis of a measurement system is determined by the statistical properties of reproducable measurements in a stable environment. In order to be valid, the measurement system must be in statistical, product and process control. This means that variation is random (common cause), and that measurements have appropriate resolution relative to the specified part tolerance.

Applications for Self-Locking Gears 2012-05-14
Author: Dr. Alexander L. Kapelevich/ AKGears, LLC
From: Gear Solution
In most gear drives, when driving torque is suddenly reduced as a result of power off, torsional vibration, power outage, or any mechanical failure at the transmission input side, then gears will be rotating either in the same direction driven by the system inertia, or in the opposite direction driven by the resistant output load due to gravity, spring load, etc. The latter condition is known as backdriving. During inertial motion or backdriving, the driven output shaft (load) becomes the driving one and the driving input shaft (load) becomes the driven one. There are many gear drive applications where output shaft driving is undesirable. In order to prevent it, different types of brake or clutch devices are used.
